Craig "HALOphax" Kennedy is one of the founders of "HALOphax", a maritime based competitive gaming league. I had a chance to ask him a few questions about his business, and what it has to offer to young gamers like ourselves.
So introduce yourself, and others that are a big part of running HALOphax.
My name is Craig Kennedy and I’m from Halifax, NS.
Last November, right after the HALO3 video game came out, Ryan Staples (a good friend of mine at the time) decided to throw a HALO tournament at the Dartmouth Sportsplex. We both had friends who were into competitive gaming, so thought it would be a fun way to make a few bucks and have a good time! The event was a HUGE success, so we decided to register the name "HALOphax" as a business.
Tell us about HALOphax. what is it?
HALOphax is a local gaming community for the Atlantic Canadian Region. We provide fun and organized events for both hardcore/casual gamers, and those wanting to play for fun. We have recently registered a promotions company "Rampage Promotions" and run HALOphax underneath the promotion company name. This will allow us to diversify and try new things without limiting ourselves to HALO specifically.
Where did you come up with the idea for HALOphax? What motivated you to go through with it?
Well, we didn’t "plan" HALOphax...after the first tournament...people were asking "when’s the next one?". For some reason there was NOBODY on the East Coast running competitive video game tournaments! We decided to create a website to build our new "community", and plan future events to grow our new business. The gamers have been our motivation all along! Their passion to play, and excitement for HALOphax events keeps us rolling!
Was there any dead zones, or points where you were wondering if it was worth it? If so, what made you keep your head up and truck through it?
We have had a few "dead zones" that make it tough to stay motivated. To keep our costs down, and provide decent enough prizes to keep gamers interested, we usually rely on volunteers to help out. When we only have a few staff running an event with up to 100 gamers, the effort and lack of sleep can be DEVISTTATING! Usually after an event...the last thing we ever want to do is throw another one. Now that we can rely on sponsors for event funding, we can hire staff to make the events run smoother.
What is your "Flagship Game"?
Our flagship game is HALO3! We are trying to diversify and add other gamers to broaden our market, but will always be committed to our loyal HALO gamers!
Why this game?
This game was the reason for our launch. Without this game and its dedicated following, we wouldn’t be in business today.
Do you only offer events for this one game? What are the other game titles you offer?
We also offer tournaments in NHL 2009, MADEEN 2009, ROCKBAND, GUITAR HERO, PGR, and Virtua Fighter.
When is your next big event? Can you give us any details on it?
Our next big event is HALOphax SHOWTIME at Empire Theatres on November 9th! We will be hosting HALO3 4v4, HALO3 2v2, MADDEN 09 1v1, NHL 09 1v1 and NHL 09 2v2! We will allow gamers to play XBOX360 titles on the BIG SCREEN during competition!
